Intro
Float is an Indonesian independent band led by singer-songwriter Hotma “Meng” Roni Simamora. Officially formed on August 30, 2004, its roots trace back to the early 2000s, when Meng, Windra “Bontel” Benyamin (guitar), and Raymond Agus Saputra (bass) began recording songs written by Meng in the 1990s.
Blending folk, pop, rock, blues, and jazz, Float is known for its acoustic warmth, atmospheric arrangements, and introspective songwriting. The band gained wider recognition through “Music for 3 Hari Untuk Selamanya” (2007), its soundtrack collaboration with filmmakers Mira Lesmana & Riri Riza, which won awards at the Jakarta Film Festival and MTV Indonesia Movie Awards.
Over the years, Float has undergone several lineup changes while preserving its spirit of creative freedom. In 2011, the band introduced a distinctive rotational ambigram logo, inspired by Meng’s admiration for Dan Brown’s “The Da Vinci Code”.
In 2012, Float initiated Float2Nature, bringing music, travel, and nature together through intimate gatherings with its community, the Floatmates, guided by the philosophy: “When Music Travels Back to Mother Nature.”
Its 2026 EP, “Constant Changes“, continues the band’s exploration of transformation, resilience, and healing.
Float’s current lineup comprises Meng, David Qlintang (guitar), Binsar Tobing (bass), and Timur Segara (drums).
